Quick answer

How a straight works

The lowest straight is 5-4-3-2-A (the ‘wheel’) and the highest is A-K-Q-J-10 (‘Broadway’). Straights can’t wrap around the ace, so Q-K-A-2-3 is not a straight.

An open-ended straight draw has 8 outs; a gutshot (inside) draw has 4.

Ties: The straight with the higher top card wins. Identical straights split the pot.

Tips for playing it

  • When you make a straight with one end open, check whether a higher straight is possible using cards your opponent might hold.
  • On boards with three or more cards of one suit, a straight can lose to a flush.
