Poker position explained: why acting last wins more

MyClubGG Editorial Team 2 min readUpdated हिन्दी में पढ़ें

Quick answer

Position is where you sit relative to the dealer button, and it decides the order you act in. The player who acts last after the flop sees what everyone else does first, which lets them win more with strong hands and lose less with weak ones. That is why good players play more hands from late position.

What position means

Before the flop, action starts left of the big blind. After the flop, it starts with the first active player left of the button. The button always acts last after the flop, so it is the best seat at the table.

Being in position means you act after your opponent on the flop, turn and river. Out of position means you act first.

Why acting last is so valuable

Acting last lets you:

  • See their action first. A check often signals weakness, a big bet strength.
  • Control the pot size. You can check behind with medium hands to keep the pot small, or bet to build it.
  • Bluff more effectively. When an opponent checks to you, a bet can take the pot.
  • Realise your equity. You get to see more free cards with your draws.

Across millions of hands, most players’ win rate is highest on the button and lowest in the blinds.

The six seats at a 6-max table

  1. UTG (under the gun): first to act preflop. Tightest range.
  2. HJ (hijack): two seats right of the button.
  3. CO (cutoff): one seat right of the button. A strong stealing seat.
  4. BTN (button): acts last after the flop. Widest range.
  5. SB (small blind): posts half a bet and acts first after the flop.
  6. BB (big blind): posts a full bet and closes the preflop action.

At a full-ring (9-handed) table there are extra early seats (UTG+1, UTG+2 and the lojack) where you should be tighter still.

How to adjust by seat

  • Early position: play only strong hands, since up to five players still act behind you.
  • Late position: open more hands, especially when the players in the blinds fold a lot.
  • Small blind: raise or fold. Just calling invites the big blind in cheaply and leaves you out of position.
  • Big blind: you’re getting a discount to call, so defend reasonably often, but fold weak offsuit hands against early raises.

Position after the flop

When you are out of position, play a bit more cautiously. Check more of your medium hands and use the check-raise with strong hands and good draws. In position, you can bet more often when checked to, and take free cards with your draws.

Quick drill

For your next session, keep track of your results by seat. PokerCraft on ClubGG can break down your results by position. If your early-position and small-blind results are poor, tighten up there first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best position in poker?

The button. It acts last on every betting round after the flop, which gives the most information and control.

What does UTG mean in poker?

Under the gun: the first player to act before the flop, sitting directly left of the big blind.

Why is the small blind a bad position?

You already have chips in, which tempts you to play, but you act first on every street after the flop, so you are out of position for the whole hand.
