Poker hand quiz: which hand wins?

Reading the winner quickly is a core poker skill. Each round deals two Hold’em hands and a full five-card board; you pick Hand A, Hand B or a split pot, then see the answer with both hand types. Switch to ‘Kicker battles’ for rounds where both players have the same type of hand.

How to read the winner

Each player makes the best five-card hand from their two cards and the five on the board. First compare hand types (a flush beats a straight, two pair beats one pair). If both are the same type, compare the cards that make the hand, then the kickers.

If the best five cards are the same for both players, for example when the board itself is the best hand, the pot is split. Suits never break ties.

Frequently asked questions

What beats what in poker?

From best to worst: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, one pair, high card.

What is a kicker?

An unpaired side card that breaks ties between hands of the same type, such as two players with a pair of aces.

When is the pot split?

When both players’ best five cards have exactly the same ranks. This often happens when the five board cards are the best possible hand for both.

Do suits matter?

No. All suits are equal in standard poker, so identical hands in different suits split the pot.
