EV = (chance of each outcome × what you win or lose in it), added together. A +EV decision makes money in the long run even if it loses this time. Thinking in EV rather than results is one of the biggest steps a player can take.
Example: Calling 50 to win 150 with 30% equity: 0.30 × 150 − 0.70 × 50 = +10 chips on average.
