Limpers often have weak ranges, so raising lets you take the initiative and thin the field. A common guide is to raise to about 3 or 4 big blinds, plus one extra big blind for each limper. Isolation raises work best in position and with hands that play well heads-up.
Example: Blinds are 1/2. A player limps for 2 and you raise to 10 on the button with A♦ J♣, hoping to play against the limper alone.
