Polarized range: A polarized range contains very strong hands and bluffs but few medium-strength hands, and is typical when someone makes a large bet.

Medium hands rarely want to make big bets: they beat bluffs but lose to strong hands. So big bets and overbets tend to come from polarized ranges. The opposite is a merged range. Spotting which type your opponent is likely to have helps you choose your bluff-catchers.
Example: On the river you overbet with either the nut flush or a missed straight draw, but check your second pair.
