How a four of a kind works
Quads are a monster, but on a paired or trips board other strong hands are possible, so look at the board before you get carried away.
When four of a kind is on the board, everyone has quads and the kicker decides the pot.
Ties: Higher quads win. If both players share quads on the board, the highest fifth card (kicker) decides.
Also called: quads.
What it beats and what beats it
Beats
Full house, Flush, Straight, Three of a kind, Two pair, One pair, High card
Loses to
Royal flush, Straight flush
Tips for playing it
- Holding a pocket pair is the most common way to make quads: you need both remaining cards of your rank on the board.
- With quads, slow-playing is often reasonable because there are so few cards left that improve your opponent enough to call big bets.
