How a two pair works
Two pair is the most common finished hand in seven-card poker after one pair. On a paired board, many players have two pair, so its value drops.
When the board shows two pairs, everyone has at least two pair and the kicker or a higher pair decides.
Ties: Compare the higher pair, then the lower pair, then the kicker.
What it beats and what beats it
Beats
One pair, High card
Loses to
Royal flush, Straight flush, Four of a kind, Full house, Flush, Straight, Three of a kind
Tips for playing it
- Top two pair is strong on dry boards but can be vulnerable to straights and flushes on wet boards.
- On a paired board, a hand like 9-4 with a 4 on board is often only one pair plus the board pair; it is weaker than it looks.
