What does “ante” mean in poker?

Ante: A small forced bet taken from every player (or a big-blind ante from one player) before the deal.

Antes are common in the later stages of tournaments. They make the pot bigger before anyone acts, which rewards stealing the blinds and widens the range of hands worth playing.
