Draws are measured in outs: the unseen cards that complete them. The rule of 2 and 4 gives a quick estimate: multiply your outs by 2 with one card to come, or by 4 from the flop to the river. Compare that figure with your pot odds to decide whether a call makes sense.
Example: With an open-ended straight draw (8 outs) on the flop, the rule of 4 gives about 32%, close to the true figure of about 31.5%.
