What does “hole cards” mean in poker?

Definition
Hole cards: The private cards dealt face down to each player: two in Texas Hold’em, four in PLO, five in PLO5.

Only you can see your hole cards. You combine them with the shared community cards (the board) to make the best possible five-card hand. In Hold’em you can use any combination of your two hole cards and the five board cards. In Omaha you must use exactly two hole cards and three board cards.
Example: You are dealt A♠ K♠. Those two cards are your hole cards.
