What does “muck” mean in poker?

Definition
Muck: To muck is to discard your hand without showing it; the muck is also the pile of folded and discarded cards on the table.

Folding mucks your cards. At showdown you can often muck a losing hand rather than show it, which gives away less information about how you play. In live games a hand that touches the muck is usually dead, so protect your cards until the pot is pushed to you.
Example: You call a river bet with K♣ Q♦ and your opponent shows a flush. You muck without showing your hand.
