With eight outs, an open-ended straight draw hits about 17% of the time on the next card and about 31.5% from the flop to the river. Combined with a flush draw it can be a favourite against a single pair.
Example: You hold 9♣ 8♣ on a flop of 7♦ 6♠ K♥. Any 10 or 5 completes your straight.
