Opening with a raise instead of limping gives you the initiative and a chance to win the blinds straight away. Common online sizes are 2 to 3 big blinds, sometimes a little larger from the small blind. Your opening range should widen the closer you sit to the button.
Example: Everyone folds to you in the cutoff and you raise to 2.5 big blinds with K♥ J♥.
