With a short stack there is little room for play after the flop, so decisions often become push or fold. Hands with high-card strength, such as big aces and pairs, gain value, while speculative hands lose value. Short stacks are common in tournaments as the blinds rise.
Example: With 12 big blinds on the button, moving all-in with A♦ 8♣ is often better than raising small and folding to a 3-bet.
