Slow-playing works best when the board is dry, your opponent likes to bluff and few cards can hurt you. On wet boards it often backfires, because you give free cards to draws and miss value. Most strong hands make more over time by betting. Slow-play only a small part of your strong hands, so your checks stay believable.
Example: You flop a set with 9♠ 9♦ on 9♣ 4♥ 2♠ and check, hoping your opponent bets the turn.
