Trips: Trips is three of a kind made with one hole card and a pair on the board, unlike a set, which uses a pocket pair.

Because the pair is on the board, another player may also hold the remaining card of that rank, so your kicker often decides who wins. Trips is easier for opponents to spot than a set. Be careful in big pots when your kicker is weak. Trips with a strong kicker can usually bet for value, but with a weak kicker pot control is often wiser.
Example: You hold 8♠ 6♣ on a flop of 8♦ 8♥ K♠. You have trip eights, but anyone holding A-8 or K-8 beats you.
