Online poker tells: timing, sizing and patterns

MyClubGG Editorial Team 4 min readUpdated हिन्दी में पढ़ें

Quick answer

Online poker tells come from timing, bet sizing and repeated betting patterns rather than body language. Bet sizing and patterns are the most useful, while timing is often unreliable because of connection lag and multitasking. Treat any tell as a small adjustment on top of sound range-based decisions, never as a reason on its own.

Start with the limits

Online, you cannot see faces or hands. What you can see is when a player acts, how much they bet and what patterns they repeat. These clues can help, but they are weaker than most players think.

  • Timing is noisy. Players multitask, play several tables, use slow connections or get distracted.
  • Players change. A tell from one session may be gone in the next.
  • Small samples mislead. One odd hand is a story, not a pattern.

There is also a simple reason most tells are weak: people play many hands the same way out of habit. A player who always takes four seconds to act gives you nothing, whatever the size of the pot.

So use tells as a tiebreaker. Your decision should come from ranges, pot odds and board texture first. A tell only nudges a close decision one way or the other.

Timing tells

Timing tells are the most talked about and the least reliable. Some common patterns:

Instant check or call

An instant call on the flop or turn often means a medium hand or a draw. Players with monsters tend to think about raising, and players with nothing usually fold. An instant check frequently means the player has decided not to fight for the pot.

Long pause, then a check

Often a player with a marginal hand deciding whether to bet. Sometimes a distracted player.

Long pause, then a big bet or raise

This one splits both ways. Some players pause to fake strength, others to work out a value size. Do not read much into it without a history with that player.

Pre-selected actions

Many apps let you pre-select check or fold before your turn. A check that appears instantly can mean the player is not interested in the pot, but it can just as easily mean a habit.

Bet-sizing tells

Bet sizes are the strongest online tell, especially from less experienced players, who often size bets by hand strength.

  • Big bets with strong hands, small bets with weak ones. If a player bets pot with sets and a quarter-pot with weak pairs, adjust your calls and raises.
  • Tiny river bets. Often a weak made hand trying to reach a cheap showdown. A raise can fold it out.
  • Min-raises after the flop. From inexperienced players, this is often a very strong hand trying to build a pot.
  • Overbets. Usually polarised: the nuts or a bluff. Use player type and board to decide which.

A sizing example

Over an hour, you notice one player bets about a third of the pot with weak pairs and draws, and three-quarters of the pot when they show down two pair or better. On the river they bet three-quarters of the pot into you. You hold top pair with a weak kicker. On its own, you might call. With this pattern, folding is the stronger play.

Compare sizes within one player’s history. A half-pot bet means nothing on its own. A half-pot bet from someone who always bets pot with strong hands means a lot.

Pattern tells

Patterns are what you learn by watching many hands.

  • Check-raise only with strong hands. Many players only check-raise the flop with two pair or better. Fold your one-pair hands accordingly.
  • Stab when checked to. Some players bet every time the action is checked to them. Check-raise or float these players more.
  • Folds to 3-bets. A player who opens often but folds to re-raises is a prime 3-bet target.
  • Give up on the turn. If a player c-bets the flop but rarely bets the turn, call the flop wider.

Stats like VPIP and aggression factor summarise these patterns. PokerCraft shows your own stats. For opponents, keep short notes if your app allows it, and check each app’s rules about tracking tools.

Turning patterns into notes

Keep notes short and specific. “Check-raised flop with a set, showed down” is useful. “Seems tricky” is not. After a session, look back at notes for players you meet often and update them. Good notes beat memory.

Chat and table behaviour

  • Angry chat after a loss is a strong tilt sign. Expect looser calls and bluffs.
  • Sitting out and coming back right after a big pot can also signal frustration.
  • Players who rush every decision may be bored or impatient, which often leads to loose calls.
  • Friendly, chatty players are often recreational and play for fun, which usually means wider, more passive ranges.

Hiding your own tells

Good players think about what they reveal.

  • Act at a steady pace. Take a similar amount of time on easy and hard decisions.
  • Use the same sizes for value hands and bluffs in the same spot.
  • Avoid obvious habits, such as always min-raising with sets or always checking when you miss.
  • Stay calm in chat. Venting tells everyone you are tilting.
  • Review your own hands. In PokerCraft, look for spots where your bet size or timing matched your hand strength too closely, and change them.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting timing over maths. A fast call does not make a bad call good.
  • Overreacting to one hand. Wait for a pattern.
  • Forgetting the player type. A tell from a beginner means something different from the same action by a strong regular. See player types.
  • Ignoring your own patterns. Your opponents are reading you too.

Quick checklist

What does the range and pot odds say? Has this player shown this pattern before? Does the size match their usual value or bluff sizes? Is the tell strong enough to change a close decision? If not, stick with the maths.

Frequently asked questions

Are there real tells in online poker?

Yes, but they are weaker than live tells. Bet sizing and repeated betting patterns are the most useful, while timing is often affected by lag and distraction.

What does an instant call usually mean online?

It often points to a medium-strength hand or a draw, because players with very strong hands tend to consider raising. Treat it as a hint, not proof.

Which online tell is most reliable?

Consistent bet-sizing patterns from the same player, especially less experienced players who bet bigger with stronger hands.

How can I avoid giving off tells?

Act at a steady pace, use the same bet sizes for value hands and bluffs in the same spot, and keep chat neutral.
