What does “3-bet” mean in poker?

Definition
3-bet: The first re-raise before the flop: the big blind counts as the first bet and the open-raise as the second.

A 3-bet can be for value (with hands like QQ+ or AK) or as a bluff (with hands that play well if called, such as suited aces). It builds a bigger pot and often takes the initiative into the flop.
Example: The cutoff raises to 2.5 bb and you re-raise on the button to 8 bb. That is a 3-bet.
