Describing stacks in big blinds lets you compare spots across different blind levels. A 50-big-blind stack plays very differently from a 200-big-blind stack. In table-stakes games you can only bet the chips in front of you at the start of a hand, never extra chips from your pocket.
Example: With blinds of 50/100, a stack of 4,000 chips is 40 big blinds.

- Effective stackThe effective stack is the smallest stack among the players in a hand, because that is the most anyone can win or lose against it.
- Deep stackA deep stack is a stack that is large compared with the blinds, usually 100 big blinds or more, allowing more complex post-flop play.
- Short stackA short stack is a stack that is small relative to the blinds, often around 20 big blinds or fewer, which limits your options.
