What does “straddle” mean in poker?

Straddle: An optional blind bet, usually twice the big blind, posted before the cards are dealt.

A straddle effectively doubles the stakes for that hand and makes stacks shallower in big blinds. Whether straddles are allowed depends on the game or club rules.
