Each pocket pair has 6 combos and each unpaired hand has 16: 4 suited and 12 offsuit. Counting combos shows how likely different hands are within a range. Cards on the board and in your own hand reduce the combos available, which is the idea behind blockers.
Example: On a K♠ 7♦ 2♣ flop, a set of kings has only 3 combos left, while A-K still has 12.
