Pocket jacks (JJ)

हिन्दी में पढ़ें

Quick answer

Pocket jacks are a strong pair with about 77.5% equity against one random hand. Raise from any position and 3-bet often, but remember that overcards will flop much of the time, so jacks need careful handling after the flop.

How to play JJ by position

6-max cash game, around 100 big blinds deep.

Early position (UTG)
Open-raise. Jacks are well ahead of a typical calling range.
Middle position (hijack)
Open-raise, and 3-bet against most opens.
Late position (cutoff, button)
Open-raise or 3-bet. Position makes jacks much easier to play after the flop.
Blinds
Raise when folded to and 3-bet against late-position opens. Against a tight early raiser, calling is also fine.
Facing a raise
3-bet most opens for value. Facing a 4-bet, jacks become marginal: continue against loose players, but folding to a tight 4-bet at 100bb is often correct.

After the flop

  • On flops with no overcard, such as 9♠ 6♦ 3♣, bet for value: you usually have the best hand.
  • When a single overcard flops, keep pots smaller and use checks to control the size of the pot.
  • Against several opponents, overcards hit someone more often, so slow down with jacks on high boards.

JJ against common hands

Jacks win 57.1% against AKo, the standard pair-versus-overcards flip, and 67.4% against ATs, where the ace-ten has only one overcard. Against QQ they win just 18.5%.

Common mistakes with JJ

  • Treating jacks like aces and stacking off against a tight 4-bet.
  • Playing too passively before the flop and letting weak broadway hands see a cheap flop with overcards.
  • Firing three big bets on boards with two overcards when called on every street.

Pocket jacks FAQ

Why do jacks feel so hard to play?

Three ranks beat them (queens, kings, aces), and an overcard often lands on the flop. The hand is strong before the flop but frequently becomes a medium pair afterwards.

Should I call or 3-bet with jacks?

3-betting is usually better in 6-max games because it builds a pot while you are ahead and folds out hands that would otherwise flop overcards.

How do I play jacks in a tournament with a short stack?

With 15bb or less, shove or call all-ins in nearly every spot. Jacks are a strong push-fold hand.
