How to play 66 by position

6-max cash game, around 100 big blinds deep.

Early position (UTG)
Open-raise in 6-max games, but be ready to fold to a 3-bet.
Middle position (hijack)
Open-raise. Facing an open, call only when stacks are deep enough to set-mine.
Late position (cutoff, button)
Open-raise. Position helps you realise your equity and take pots when others miss.
Blinds
Raise when folded to; call opens when stacks are deep, and fold to big 3-bets.
Facing a raise
Call a single raise if effective stacks are roughly 15–20 times the call. Fold most of the time against a 3-bet.

After the flop

  • You flop a set or better about 11.8% of the time. When you miss, you often have nothing better than an underpair.
  • Against a single opponent on a very dry low board, a check can let you reach showdown cheaply.
  • When you flop a set on a wet board, bet: you want draws to pay you.

66 against common hands

Sixes win 55.2% against AKo but only 18.4% against 77. Against A5s they win 65.1%: the five is lower than the pair, so the ace-five needs an ace or a straight or flush.

Common mistakes with 66

  • Calling raises with shallow stacks where set-mining cannot pay off.
  • Calling several streets with an underpair on boards full of high cards.
  • Opening too many small pairs from early position in full-ring games.

Pocket sixes FAQ

Should I call a raise with sixes?

Yes, when stacks are deep. If stacks are shorter than roughly 15–20 times the call, folding is often better.

Can sixes win without a set?

Sometimes, on very low boards or when the opponent missed. But against strong action on high boards, sixes are usually behind.

How do I play sixes with a short stack in a tournament?

With 15bb or less, push from late position and the blinds when folded to you; from early seats, shoving or folding depends on stack size and table.
