How to play 99 by position
6-max cash game, around 100 big blinds deep.
- Early position (UTG)
- Open-raise. In 6-max, nines are comfortably strong enough to open from the first seat.
- Middle position (hijack)
- Open-raise. Against an earlier open, calling or 3-betting are both reasonable.
- Late position (cutoff, button)
- Open-raise, and consider 3-betting against wide cutoff or button opens.
- Blinds
- Raise when folded to. Against an open, calling to see a flop is usually fine, with 3-bets against wide late openers.
- Facing a raise
- Call or 3-bet against a single open depending on the opener’s position. Against a 3-bet, calling in position works when stacks are deep; against a 4-bet, fold.
After the flop
- A pocket pair flops a set or better about 11.8% of the time. When you hit, aim to build a big pot.
- On low boards with no overcards, bet for value and protection.
- With two overcards on the flop, nines are mostly a bluff-catcher. Check, keep the pot small and fold to sustained pressure.
99 against common hands
Nines win 80.9% against 88, a typical overpair edge, and 55.5% against AKo. Against TT they win only 18.5%, showing how much an underpair struggles against a bigger pair.

- Stacking off with an overpair on a 8♠ 7♠ 6♦-type board against strong action.
- Calling 4-bets before the flop and getting your chips in against bigger pairs.
- Folding nines too often to small c-bets on low, dry flops.

Pocket nines FAQ
Should I 3-bet with pocket nines?
Against wide openers in late position, yes. Against a tight early opener, calling to see a flop is often better.
Are nines a set-mining hand?
Partly. They can win as the best pair, but your biggest pots usually come from flopping a set.
How do I play nines with a short stack in a tournament?
With 15bb or less, nines are a clear push from every position when folded to you, and usually a call against a late-position shove.
