How to play 77 by position
6-max cash game, around 100 big blinds deep.
- Early position (UTG)
- Open-raise in 6-max. In a full-ring game, folding or opening more tightly is also fine.
- Middle position (hijack)
- Open-raise. Facing an open, calling in position is the usual play.
- Late position (cutoff, button)
- Open-raise. In position you can see flops cheaply and win pots after the flop.
- Blinds
- Raise when folded to, and call opens when stacks are deep enough to set-mine.
- Facing a raise
- Call a single open when stacks are deep; the rule of thumb is roughly 15–20 times the call in effective stacks. Fold to most 3-bets unless you are in position and deep.
After the flop
- Expect to flop a set or better about 11.8% of the time. When it happens, build the pot.
- On boards with two or more overcards, check and give up if your opponent bets with strength.
- Sevens can win as the best hand on very low flops, but avoid overvaluing them on connected boards.
77 against common hands
Sevens win 55.2% against AKo and 54% against KQo: small to medium pairs are only slight favourites against two overcards. Against the bigger pair 88, they win just 18.4%.

Pocket sevens FAQ
Are pocket sevens a good hand?
They are a decent hand before the flop and a good set-mining hand, but they rarely win big pots as one pair.
What does set-mining mean with sevens?
Calling a raise mainly to flop three of a kind. You hit about 1 in 8.5 times, so you need deep stacks to make it pay.
How do I play sevens with a short stack in a tournament?
With 15bb or less, push when folded to you from most positions. Calling another player’s shove depends on their range and your stack.
